Challenges with KFC
Since I began my journey of becoming a vegan/vegetarian 3+ months ago, it has been interesting to say the least. My body is still adjusting, somewhat, but I am finding my habits of the past are hard to get rid of… namely fast food sites. My favorite by far was Wendy’s. They say old habits die hard, but bad habits are harder still. Oh, those were the days; when I could roll up to a drive through window and buy a Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich. I enjoyed those chicken sandwiches for years. Now that is all gone…
That’s the problem with my new choice of food sources – I can’t go through a local “fast food vegan/vegetarian” place because I haven’t found one yet! However, what I am discovering is that the convenience of fast food coupled with unhealthy food is likely a major contributor to problems in health. Think about it – how did the native populations or the early pioneers get their food? They had to work for it, plan it and grow it. Today, we get all vegetables, fruits just about year round at the market, along with every other food substance within a city limit. We are hunters and gathers by nature, so is it any wonder that many people in industrialized nations are getting fatter when we have access to so much processed and delicious food?
Speaking of delicious food, one place that I would go to once a year (at most) was KFC. Considering Colonel Sanders and I are likely related, it was the least I could do for the family. However, the problem was that after eating a few of the original pieces, I would want more – like an addiction. Even today, KFC original recipe chicken breast is really the only place (and food) that I have a craving for – strange, I know.
It just proves that some things you can’t get over, at least for now. So far, I have resisted the urge and usually its done by thinking of something else and when a commercial comes on, change the channel. Consider how hard it was for me to write this blog?
I have discovered some wonderful recipes that I will share in a future post. Until then, keep smiling.
