Designated?

Designated?

Recently, a routine police patrol parked outside the North Star bar in Rochester, Minnesota. After last call, the Officer noticed a man leaving the bar so intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his car and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally, he started the car,...

Vegan vs Vegetarian

Vegan vs Vegetarian

As I have stated in a previous post, I am now a vegetarian.   This is a choice for me for physical reasons pertaining to my family health history. For this post, I wanted to focus a bit on the difference between vegan and vegetarian and share a bit more about the challenges. Vegetarian: encompasses the practice of following plant-based diets (fruits, vegetables, etc.), with or without the inclusion of dairy products or eggs, and with the exclusion of meat (red meat, poultry, and seafood). Abstention from by-products of animal slaughter, such...

ACT NOW – STOP SOPA/PIPA

ACT NOW – STOP SOPA/PIPA

The stated goal of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its Senate counterpart, the Protect IP Act (PIPA), is to confront the sale and distribution of movies!    Because Hollywood says they need protection, we need to lose all common sense and pass NEW laws that will affect the rest of the interconnected world? We already have laws on the books to prevent piracy problems and we certainly do not need more encroachment.   SOPA/PIPA need to be  stopped.  Call your Representative(s) and tell them to vote against passing this bill.   The internet...

Management Lessons

Lesson 1: An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, “Can I also sit like you and do nothing?” The eagle answered: “Sure, why not.”  So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested.  All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.   Lesson 2: A turkey was chatting with a bull. “I would love to be able to get to the top of that...

Challenges with KFC

Since I began my journey of becoming a vegan/vegetarian 3+ months ago, it has been interesting to say the least.  My body is still adjusting, somewhat, but I am finding my habits of the past are hard to get rid of…  namely fast food sites.   My favorite by far was Wendy’s.   They say old habits die hard, but bad habits are harder still.    Oh, those were the days;  when I could roll up to a drive through window and buy a Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich.   I enjoyed those chicken sandwiches for years.   Now that is all...

Cheerios

Two little brothers decide it`s time to learn to swear. The oldest says,”OK, you say ass and I`ll say hell.” Excited about their plan, they go downstairs where their mother asks them what they want for breakfast. “Aw, hell.” says the oldest,”gimme some Cheerios.” His mother backhands him off the stool, sending him out of the room bawling and turns to the younger brother saying, “What`ll you have?” “I dunno,” says the boy,”but you can bet your ass it ain`t gonna be...

Things They Should Teach in School

If you plug in your electric IFX race car track/controller and put your finger on the hot side of the socket, it will shock you. If you plug in a 330 volt, 3 phase toaster oven, make sure you are not standing in water or have your finger on the hot side of the socket. An 8 year old boy and his 3 speed Schwinn can fly 30 feet if given 40 yards on a gravel sloped driveway with a 10% grade and a 15 foot pile of dirt at the bottom of  the driveway. Flying 30 feet on a 3 speed Schwinn causes sever head trauma, unconsciousness, and memory loss, not...

You Are What You Eat – Time to Change WHAT I Am

I am in my late 40’s and have been “overweight” for 15-20 years – not obese, just “chunky”. I’ve been a regular meat and potatoes guy since birth and some of my favorite foods are eggs, bacon, hamburgers, and juicy steaks. Add in fish, especially sushi, the usual lobster, clam and oysters a few vegetables and fruits, and you get the idea. A few days before October 1st 2011, I watched a video called “Forks over Knives” and I decided I should change my diet and become a vegetarian. I...

Parenting 101

Brian S Parenting is like driving – always a few curves in the road but beautiful along the way I can remember as a young child (7-10 years) that when I got into trouble and was grounded as punishment, I would get very angry.   Of course, over time I created a list of things I would and wouldn’t do when I became a father.   As I grew older (before 21), I also began to think about the challenges of raising children and that raising one child would certainly be easier than half a dozen;  that a boy would be easier than a girl; and...
